One of the unique things about skiing at Mission Ridge near Wenatchee, Washington, who is also the site of a military plane crash. In fact, non-skiers may not know that many of the names of ski slopes and the geographical characteristics of the plane crash are named after the semi-famous. On September 30, 1944 a flight crew flyingBombers from the base of the Walla Walla Army crashed into the ridge after losing due to darkness and bad weather.

There is a section of the wing bomber mounted on tracks (and people can still occasionally find other remnants of the wreck), with a commemorative plaque on it saying:

They were flyingB - 24 "Liberator heavy bomber. The night was rainy and the valley was shrouded by dense fog. At 8:00 the clock Beehive Lookout reported hearing the roar of the engines is a plane passing overhead. In the moments' fire was seen, slight haze, notifying the lookout, the plane probably crashed. Because of darkness, weather and terrain, research efforts have been delayed. The next morning, when a party comes to save the Rock Bowl, just 500 meters below the crestMission Ridge, they found flames due to heavy rains the previous night had gone. The wreckage was scattered hundreds of feet above the slope and the bodies of all six crew members were found. There were no survivors. "
